The Chinese tourism industry is experiencing a shortage of Russian-speaking specialists, particularly tour operators and tour guides. According to leading Russian tour operators, the coronavirus pandemic is cited as the main factor contributing to this scarcity, RIA Novosti reports.

Sergey Jan Sha, at the helm of the Russian-Chinese Club, underscored the growing fascination among Russians with China, encompassing its rich history and vibrant culture. He has expressed regret that the level of training of guides in China does not meet the demands of Russian guests. Because of the pandemic, guides have been out of work for almost four years, and most of them have chosen other spheres, most often they now work within domestic businesses.

Sergei Nazarov, head of the board of directors at China Travel tour operator, highlighting the challenge of finding high-level Russian-speaking guides in China.

Collaborative discussions have commenced at this point. Chinese partners are committed to enhance the study of the Russian language, and the Russian side is actively involved, offering assistance in developing standards and a curated list of programs tailored to the interests of Russian tourists. Though the joint effort is anticipated to take from 6 months to a year. Experts predict a potential surge in tour traffic between Russia and China by 2024.
