Russian Anton Kurpyakov became the first person in the world to ride a stand-up paddle board at the North Pole. The traumatologist decided to stand on a fragile inflatable board between ice floes over a four-kilometer layer of water. ''Setting records at the North Pole increases the prestige of the country,” he said in an interview with Lenta.ru.

For six years, Anton Kurpyakov has been participating in Arctic expeditions and sailing on a nuclear icebreaker as a doctor. He has considerable experience in independent passages on various watercraft and many achievements in extreme sports.

According to Anton, he understood the dangers of stand-up paddle boarding in northern waters, and therefore stayed close to the ship so that the crew had the opportunity to come to his aid. According to the doctor, he was interested not only in sensations, but also in how the board behaves in the water between the ice, how it glides and overcomes hummocks.

Adding to the difficulties is the temperature of the water and air, due to which the air pressure in the inflatable board changes. In addition, the Russian was afraid of damaging the paddleboard on the sharp edges of the ice floes.
