The authorities of the Velyki Heyivtsi village, Transcarpathian region, located in western Ukraine, did not want to change the name of the street named after the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, as part of the so-called decommunization, which has been carried out in Ukraine for eight years, TASS reports.

The wave of demolition of monuments and renaming of settlements, streets and squares bearing the names of Russian and Soviet figures has intensified in the past year. About 10,000 place names were changed during this period of time.

Earlier, residents of Odessa did not support the proposal to rename Leo Tolstoy Square. The city authorities put this issue to an electronic vote, and the majority of Odessa residents expressed a desire to preserve the square named after the classic of world literature Leo Tolstoy.
