Another Russian diplomatic mission may be closed in Finland. The initiative to close the Russian consulate in the Åland Islands received the support of 50,000 people and will be considered in the Finnish parliament, Izvestia reports.

The text accompanying the demand states that the Russian diplomatic mission in the Åland Islands should be closed, since Finland joined NATO, and the Russian consulate allegedly negatively affects the country's security.

From October, 1, Helsinki will have only one diplomatic mission in Russia, located in Moscow. Russia has an embassy in Helsinki and a consulate in the Åland Islands, which are an autonomous region within Finland.

In July of this year, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the withdrawal of its consent to the work of the Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg, as well as the expulsion of nine diplomats of the country as a response to the unfriendly policies of Helsinki. The Finnish authorities responded to this measure by closing the Russian diplomatic mission in Turku - it will stop working on October, 1.
