Russian parliamentarians supported the law on the Day of Reunification of New Regions with Russia, RIA Novosti reports. The voting took place on Tuesday, September, 19, during the plenary session.

Speaker of the lower house of parliament Vyacheslav Volodin noted that all factions supported the draft law unanimously. According to him, residents of new regions have long defended their right to speak their native language, the right to their history, faith, and culture. The Chairman of the State Duma stressed that they chose to be together with Russia.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed establishing a memorial date in honor of the reunification of new regions with Russia. The head of state submitted a draft law to parliament for consideration. He suggested celebrating this day on September, 30.

On this day a year ago, four new entities became part of Russia. Thus, the number of regions in the country has increased to 89. Agreements on the accession of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions to the Russian Federation, were signed on September, 30. The ceremony took place in the St. George Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace.

The explanatory note to the document states that new regions became part of the Russian Federation on the basis of the historical community of peoples living on their territory. This decision was made as a result of the expression of the will of millions of people who exercised their inalienable right to freely and without outside interference determine their political status and pursue economic, social and cultural development.
