The head of the Japanese Autonomous Orthodox Church has passed away, TASS reports. Metropolitan of Tokyo and all Japan Daniel died at the age of 85. This was reported on the website of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC).

Nusiro Ikio was born on September, 5, 1938 in Japan. In 1962, he graduated from the Faculty of French Literature of Aichi University, in 1965 - from the Tokyo Theological Seminary. He obtained his Master of Divinity degree in 1968 from St. Vladimir's Theological Seminary in the United States.

In 1999, at the Trinity Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra, he was tonsured a monk with the name Daniel in honor of the holy noble prince Daniel of Moscow.

A year later, he was elected Metropolitan of Tokyo and all of Japan.

The Orthodox spiritual mission in Tokyo was established in 1870. A decade later, Hieromonk Nikolai (Kasatkin) was elevated to the rank of Bishop of Reval, Vicar of the Diocese of Riga. Thus, the first episcopal see of the Japanese Orthodox Church was established. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was named Tokyo and Japanese.
