Residents of the German capital did not support Ukraine's demand to rename the Moskau cafe to "Kyiv", criticizing attempts to change the history of Germany, RIA Novosti reports.

The Berliner Zeitung cited negative comments of the locals. In May, the head of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in Germany, Aleksey Makeev, and Ukrainians living in Berlin demanded that the Moskau cafe be given the name of the Ukrainian capital.

The cafe appeared in 1961, the complex included a restaurant and a concert hall. Moskau, built in a fashionable Art Nouveau style, immediately became one of the main decorations of the Karl Marx Alley. In 1989, the cafe was recognized as an object of cultural heritage.

The authorities of the metropolitan area of Mitte, where the cafe is located, stated the importance of respecting history and noted that the name change would not lead to an end to hostilities.

The famous German architect Wolf Eisentraut noted that the demand of the Ukrainians reveals "a complete misunderstanding of the history and culture of Germany."
