The Nikolai Miklukho-Maclay Literary and Historical Society, established in Melbourne in June, among other things, will collect materials on the history of the Russian community in Australia, the Edinenie newspaper reports.

The society began its work at the local Russian House. The descendant of the legendary traveler and the founder of the Foundation, Nikolai Miklukho-Maclay, became a participant in the opening evening of the new association.

The society will work in several directions: to hold lectures and seminars, as well as presentations of books written by Russian compatriots, cultural evenings, exhibitions and other events.

In the near future, the opening of the festival for the bicentennial of the great Russian playwright Alexander Ostrovsky, the holding of a children's creative competition and a poetry evening for the 90th birthday of Andrei Voznesensky are planned.

An important direction of the society's work will be the collection of materials about the history of the Russian community in Australia, the preservation of the memory of outstanding compatriots.
