The Bank of Cyprus has sent its Russian clients letters notifying them that their bank accounts may soon be closed. It is noted that such messages are received by Russians who do not reside in Cyprus permanently and do not have citizenship of other European countries, TASS reports.

The Russian news agency was unable to get comments from representatives of the bank, which, along with other financial institutions in Cyprus, closed for the Easter holidays. A notice received by one of the Russians informs her that she needs to close the account within two months.

The bank explained this decision by ''due diligence measures." The bank thanked the Russian woman for using the services of the bank and expressed regret about the situation.

It is noted that if the holders of funds leave the notice without attention, the institution threatens to "take any action necessary to terminate the provision of services" and collect the corresponding fees.

Another Russian woman who received a similar notification said that she did not yet know how she would return funds from a Cypriot account, since it was impossible to make an electronic transfer to Russia. According to her, it is necessary to transfer money to a citizen of Cyprus, and then look for an opportunity to send them to Russia.

Cypriot media outlets note that Russians started having problems with bank accounts in Cyprus due to the fact that the FATF special financial audit service included Russian citizens in the list of ''high-risk clients''.
