Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on the termination of Russian international treaties of the Council of Europe, RIA Novosti reports. The document was published on the official website of legal information the day before, February, 28.

The document concerns the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and relevant protocols, the European Convention for the Suppression of Terrorism, the European Charter of Local Self-Government and the European Social Charter. The text of the document specifies that the international treaties of the Council of Europe will be considered terminated in Russia from March 16, 2022.

The document is aimed at eliminating the contradictions that have arisen after the exit from the Council of Europe. The rights and interests of Russian citizens are protected by Russian law. Politicians are sure that nothing will change after the adoption of this law. Russia has left the conventions of the Council of Europe, which are open only to members of this organization.

Russia launched the procedure for withdrawing from the Council of Europe on March 15, 2022. The Russian Foreign Ministry cited the systematic abuse by the EU and NATO countries of their majority in the Council of Europe as the reason. Prior to this, the countries of the European Union and NATO took another discriminatory step against Russia by suspending Moscow's representation in the statutory bodies of the Council of Europe.
