Russian journalists celebrate their professional holiday today, Parliamentskaya Gazeta writes - the Day of the Russian Press. The date was not chosen by chance: on this day, by decree of Peter the Great in 1703, 320 years ago, the first issue of the Vedomosti newspaper was published.

Before the October Revolution in Russia, the number of periodicals exceeded 3,000. After 1917, the holiday was called the Day of the Soviet Press. During the years of Soviet existence, it was celebrated on May 5, on this day the first issue of the Pravda newspaper was published. In the early 1990s, the authorities decided to move the holiday to January, 13.

Journalists and all media workers were congratulated at the Russian Foreign Ministry. The Ministry's spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, is sure that they are working for the benefit of society. According to her, in this area there are many heroes, great achievements, but also many sad pages.

Today, "honesty, accuracy, reliability, efficiency, completeness of materials, objectivity and non-biasedness remain the measure of quality journalism." This is a joint merit of all those who are involved in this noble craft, Zakharova said.
