The authorities of Vilnius began to dismantle the monument erected on the largest burial place of Soviet soldiers, TASS reports. The dismantling is planned to be completed by the Catholic Christmas.

Preparations for the destruction of the six steles began on November, 30. More than 3,000 people who died during the liberation of the city from the Nazi troops in 1944 are buried at the Antakalnis cemetery.

The mayor of the Lithuanian capital Remigius Shimasius decided to ignore the decision of the UN committee, which banned the dismantling of the monument. He announced that the international organization was allegedly misled, and called the arguments of "pro-Russian activists" "wrong."

Earlier, the UN demanded that the Latvian authorities stop the destruction of monuments erected in honor of the soldiers-liberators. The UN Human Rights Committee sent a corresponding message to the Foreign Ministry of the Baltic Republic.
