Composer Rodion Shchedrin celebrates 90th birthday

Composer Rodion Shchedrin celebrates his anniversary. On Friday, December, 16, he turns 90, TASS reports. The ceremony of presenting the Tchaikovsky medal was timed to coincide with this date. The award was established by the Russian Musical Society, it is awarded for special merits in the field of Russian classical music. Rodion Shchedrin will become its first owner.

For more than 30 years, the composer has been living in Germany. He is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Music. Until now, Shchedrin writes music by hand, without using a computer.

Rodion Shchedrin wrote 7 operas, 5 ballets, 3 symphonies, 14 concertos, numerous works of chamber, instrumental, vocal, choral music. He is the author of the ballets The Little Humpbacked Horse, Anna Karenina, The Seagull and others. He wrote them for his wife, the great ballerina, prima of the Bolshoi Theater Maya Plisetskaya. Among the operas created by Shchedrin are Lolita and The Enchanted Wanderer. He is also the author of music for several films. He was awarded the Lenin and State Prizes of the Soviet Union and Russia.
 
According to the head of the Russian Musical Society, Vladislav Shestakov, it is planned that the medal will be awarded every year on May 7, coinciding with the ceremony for Tchaikovsky's birthday, but an exception was made for Rodion Shchedrin.
 
The Mariinsky Theater will celebrate the composer's anniversary with a ballet evening. The program includes "Carmen-siyut", where the main part will be performed by Diana Vishneva. In the second act, the dancers of the Leonid Yakobson Ballet Theater will present the premiere of Mischievous Chastusheks choreographed by Vyacheslav Samodurov.
