The monument at the Antakalnis cemetery in Vilnius, where more than 3,000 people who died during the liberation of the city from Nazi troops in 1944, are buried, will be demolished soon, BALTNEWS reports.

The mayor of the Lithuanian capital, Remigius Shimasius, promised that the demolition of the monument would begin in the near future, no later than November, 24. The mayor decided to ignore the decision of the UN committee, which banned the dismantling of the monument. The mayor announced that the international organization was allegedly misled, and called the arguments of "pro-Russian activists" "wrong."

Shimashius called the monument, which commemorates the feat of the liberators, "Soviet propaganda stelae." He also stated that he was not going to destroy the graves and tombstones.
