The Russian language and culture have become closer to the inhabitants of African countries: this year, Rossotrudnichestvo opened Russian Centers in Sudan, Mali, Egypt and Algeria, and a center is being opened in Angola, Izvestia reports.

According to Yevgeny Primakov, head of Rossotrudnichestvo, Russian Centers are usually created on the basis of intergovernmental agreements, but a new format of work has recently been tested, when centers are opened in cooperation with non-governmental organizations. This allows Rossotrudnichestvo to unite people from different countries who want to implement projects related to Russia.

Primakov noted that Africa had always been in the focus of attention, since the countries of the continent are traditionally interested in the Russian language, culture and Russian education. The number of budget places for African students next year will double compared to the current one.

Currently, Russian Centers operate in more than 80 countires, they host educational and cultural events aimed at promoting the Russian language and culture. In a number of European countries, the work of Russian Centers has been suspended due to unfriendly actions of local authorities.
