The memorial, commemorating the sailors of the Baltic Fleet who died during the liberation of Tallinn, is being demolished in the Estonian capital, the telegram channel BALTNEWS reports. Work began in the early morning of October 6. The plates with the Soviet Union symbpls are being removed from the monument.

Estonian Minister of Culture Piret Hartman supported this measure, but opposed the removal of the entire monument. According to him, experts consider the memorial complex an important architectural object. At the same time, Tallinn has not yet come to a consensus on the fate of the monument.

The Maarjamägi War Memorial is located in Tallinn in the Pirita district. It includes Reconciliation Square and a military cemetery where Soviet and German soldiers who died during World War II are buried.

Earlier, the Estonian government decided to remove Soviet memorials from public space as soon as possible, as well as remove the burial places located under them. In Narva, the government dismantled the T-34 monument tank, which stood on a pedestal for more than 50 years and was a center of attraction for many citizens. Local residents came out to the defence of the monument for about two weeks, furious about the upcoming dismantling. The authorities of Narva also spoke out against the demolition of the tank.

In addition to the tank, six more military monuments were demolished in Narva. Local residents lay flowers to the places where they used to stand.
