Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics urged Russian citizens not to try to cross the border, RIA Novosti reports. From September 19, Russian citizens with Schengen visas won't be allowed into the country.

Earlier, Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius agreed that they would restrict the entry of Russian citizens into their territory. They will impose restrictions on the movement of Russians across the borders of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia with Russia and Belarus. Exceptions are made for truck drivers, diplomats, and those crossing the border for humanitarian and family reasons.

Brussels' decision to suspend the simplified visa regime with Russia came into force on September 12. This means that the number of Schengen visas for Russians will decrease, and the process of obtaining visas will get longer - the terms can be extended up to six months. The visa fee will also increase - from 35 to 80 euros. The rules for obtaining a visa, which have been in force for several years, are also being tightened.
