A ban on obtaining Schengen visas for Russians will turn into a humanitarian catastrophe for Russian compatriots living in the European Union, Sergey Petrosov, the executive secretary of the Belgian Federation of Russian-Speaking Organizations (BFRSO), is sure, TASS reports.

According to him, all Russian speakers are now finding themselves in an atmosphere of pressure and stress. And this relates to everyone, regardless of their country of origin and how they relate to the conflict in Ukraine.

The prospect of visa cancellation cannot but cause concern, he explained. After all, the majority of Russians abroad have retained many ties with the motherland in all areas - from professional to family.

In a week, at the end of August, the EU foreign ministers are planning to concider the proposl of abolishing visas, which was put forward by Helsinki and Tallinn. Thus, Finnish and Estonian politicians hope they will make Russian citizens ''pay'' for the special operation in Ukraine. Most southern and western EU countries do not support this proposal.
