The Day of Slavic Literature and Culture is celebrated on Tuesday, May 24, the Parliamentary newspaper writes. This day glorifies the creators of the Slavic writing - the saints Cyril and Methodius.

The tradition of celebrating the Day of Remembrance of these saints as the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture first appeared in Bulgaria in the 19th century. Then other Slavic countries joined the celebrations.

In Russia, the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture has been officially celebrated since 1991. According to scientists, Slavic writing was created in the 9th century, around 863. The Slavic alphabet developed by Cyril and Methodius became an additional incentive for the development of culture and the dissemination of knowledge among the Slavic peoples. In Russia, the emergence of writing served as an impetus for the development of book business and literature. The brothers translated the Gospel, the Apostle and the Psalter into Slavic.

Many events for the holiday are held in the regions of the country and abroad. In Murmansk, residents are invited to a solemn gathering, which will open with a bell ringing and continue with a prayer service at the monument to Cyril and Methodius. The traditional procession of students and teachers is planned in the Tver region. A concert program was prepared in Kyzyl and Rostov-on-Don.

In Bryansk, a campaign was launched to collect books for the residents of Donbass. The books will be collected in special containers on Slavyanskaya Square.

In Baku, a round table dedicated to the 205th anniversary of the birth of historian, ethnographer and writer Nikolai Kostomarov is timed to coincide with the holiday. It is held at the Russian Center, opened by the Russkiy Mir Foundation.

A big concert will take place in the evening on the Red Square. Among its participants will be outstanding classical musicians, including conductor Valery Gergiev, pianists Denis Matsuev and Lev Bakirov, opera soloists Khibla Gerzmava, Ildar Abddrazakov, Agunda Kulaeva, Igor Morozov, the soloist of the Donetsk Opera Maxim Alekseychuk.

According to the organizers, the concert program will consist of classical works, mainly related to Russia's historical past. Music by Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and others will be performed.
