Russian archaeologists will continue excavations at the Deraheib site in the Nubian Desert in northern Sudan. The 4th season of the archaeological and anthropological expedition of the Research Institute and the Museum of Anthropology of Lomonosov Moscow State University starts on, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.

According to Alexei Krol, leader of the expedition, Russian archaeologists found seven burials during excavations, almost all of them date back to the 9th-12th centuries AD. One of the discovered burials is possibly dated to the fourth millennium BC.

If the initial assumption is confirmed, the find will become a big event in archeology, since it was previously believed that in such ancient times gold mining had not yet been deployed in these places.

Deraheib is well known to historians. In the Middle Ages, trade caravan routes passed through this site, connecting Egypt with China, India and other countries. In addition, pilgrims on their way to Mecca and Medina passed through these lands.
