Diplomats help Russians leave South Africa, where new variant of COVID-19 emerged

Russian diplomats are organizing export flight from South Africa for Russian tourists, TASS reports. According to the Consulate General in Cape Town, the next charter flight should take off from the city on December 1.

The Boeing 737-500 will reach Moscow in about 16 hours. There will be two stops for refueling on the way: in Uganda and Egypt. The Russian Embassy in South Africa is also providing assistance to the Russians who remain at the Johannesburg airport.

Due to the new, Omicron variant of COVID-19, initially founf in South Africa, citizens of nine African countries, as well as residents of Hong Kong, are temporarily banned from entering Russia. This decision applies to Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Madagascar and Eswatini. Entry to Russia is also restricted for those who have visited these states within the last ten days.

According to Russian diplomats, up to 1,500 Russian tourists remain in South Africa. There are no direct regular flights between the cities of Russia and South Africa.
