Russian compatriot council suspends its activities in US due to special services persecution

The Coordinating Council of Organizations of Russian Compatriots in the United States has decided to suspend its activities. In a statement published on the organization's website, an investigation by American intelligence services was named the reason for its decision.

According to the council, during the year at least 300 Russian compatriots, including students and seniors, have been subjected to ''active and nation-wide FBI measures.''

The council stressed that the organization is working in a pro bono capacity. It aims to celebrate and preserve the Russian language, cultural identity and historical heritage. ''We interpret the FBI’s measures towards Russian community members, especially individuals who organize Russian cultural events and openly advocate for more dialogue and people-to-people ties with Russia, as a form of pressure reminiscent of the Cold War era,'' the council stressed.

The orgaization will remain suspended as a precautionary measure until a clarification comes from appropriate US authorities.
