Moscow has handed over the images taken by the satellite during the explosion in the port of Beirut to the Lebanese authorities, RIA Novosti reports. This was announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov after the meeting with his Lebanese counterpart.

Lavrov hopes that the images prepared by Roscosmos will help to investigate this tragic incident. Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib, in turn, thanked Russia for the assistance. He is confident that the new materials will help shed light on the tragedy.

At the end of October, Lebanese President Michel Aoun sent an official request to provide satellite images of the Beirut port at the time of the explosion to the head of the Russian diplomatic mission, Alexander Rudakov.

On the evening of August 4, 2020, about 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded near the seaport in Beirut. It was confiscated by customs a few years ago. The blast wave destroyed and damaged hundreds of buildings, cars, houses, infrastructure. Hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless. Almost 200 people died, more than 6,000 residents of the city were injured. The capital of Lebanon was recognized as a disaster zone and a two-week state of emergency was declared.
