Nine Moscow restaurants have been awarded the first Michelin stars in the history of Russia, RIA Novosti reports.
Russia became the 33rd country to be featured in a Michelin guide, with Moscow being the first city in the CIS recognized by the most prestigious guide in the world. In total, 69 restaurants were recommended by the Michelin reviewers.
The restaurants are rated on a three-star system based on reviews of inspectors, two Moscow restaurants. Artest and Twins Garden have received two stars each by the famed French culinary guide, and seven others received one star.
The Michelin guidebook has been published since the beginning of the 20th century. A restaurant can be awarded up to three Michelin stars. The inspectors apply five criteria for evaluation: quality of the ingredients used, mastery of flavour and cooking techniques, the personality of the chef in his cuisine, value for money and consistency between visits.
"Today is a historic event for the whole restaurant market - Moscow has really become one of the gastronomic capitals of the world," said Ivan Berezutsky of Twins Garden restaurant.
