The memory of the Russian and Greek heroes who fought together for the independence of Greece against the Ottoman Empire will be immortalized in Thessaloniki, TASS reports. Russia will be represented by St. Petersburg.

The St. Petersburg administration recalled that many historical figures, most directly related to the formation of independent Greece, lived in the city. Among them is Alexander Ypsilanti, a Greek who served in the Russian army and became a central figure in this struggle.

It is planned that the monument will be created in St. Petersburg and delivered to Greece. The monument to be carved out of gray granite and decorated with Russian symbols. The project of the monument is created by the architect Vladimir Filippov.

Greece wants the monument to be unveiled this fall, as this way it will coincide with the 200th anniversary of the start of the Greek revolution.
