The 62nd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) has started, TASS reports. The tournament is held online by the Herzen Russian State Pedagogical University (RSPU). The university also hosted IMO last year. The competition will last until July 24.

According to the head of the Russian government, Mikhail Mishustin, success in mathematics make it possible to build a brilliant career and even become a prime minister. He said this in his address to the participants and organizers of the Olympiad. He is sure that a young age does not prevent young people from finding various ways of solving problems, persistently looking for answers, and operate with logic in search of evidence. The prime minister has no doubts that these qualities are very useful in choosing a profession.

Teams from 109 countries are taking part in the competition. Russia is represented by six schoolchildren: Ivan Bakharev and Maxim Turevsky from St. Petersburg, Muscovites Aidar Ibragimov, Andrey Shevtsov and Danil Sibgatullin, as well as Matvey Isupov from Izhevsk. They started preparing for the tournament about a year ago.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is held annually among high school students, for the first time it took place in 1959. During two rounds, participants solve three problems. A year ago, the Russian team won two gold and four silver medals and took second place in the team competition, losing to rivals from China.
