It took 30 hours to overcome 120 kilometers of Lake Baikal for an international team of swimmers. The team included experienced athletes from Russia, the USA, Italy, France, South Africa and Morocco. The action was held to draw public attention to the cleanliness of Lake Baikal and environmental issues, TASS reports.

The temperature of the water was only 4-5 degrees Celcium. Participants did not use wetsuits. While overcoming the distance, the swimmers replaced each other, and finished together on the Jacobi beach in Irkutsk.

The swim of the international team was timed to coincide with the Year of Baikal, its purpose was to draw attention to the environmental problems of the lake, included in the UNESCO list 25 years ago.

The regional administration called this event the most important in the history of open water marathon swimming. The organizers note that they received many applications from those wishing to participate in the action.
