Monument to Soviet pilot erected in Finland

A monument to a Soviet pilot who died during the war with the Finns was erected in Finland, RIA Novosti reports.

According to the Russian Embassy, ​​the pilot died during a combat mission in early 1940. I-153 of junior lieutenant Valentin Golubev crashed near  Ristijärvi.

The burial place was known, but the identity of the fallen hero was established quite recently. This required the efforts of members of the search teams from Russia and Finland. Local residents also offered their help.

Russian diplomats ordered the monument to a Russian company in Kostomuksha. The monument was ready last year, but, due to the unfavorable epidemiological situation and restrictions aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus infection the installation to be postponed to a later date.

The project was only implemented in 2021. The opening ceremony of the monument was timed to the Day of Memory and Mourning.

Also, the Russian ambassador Pavel Kuznetsov laid flowers at the monument to Soviet submariners who died on combat missions in 1942.
