The famous opera singer Placido Domingo is going to take the stage of the Mariinsky Theater on Monday, June 28, TASS reports. Under his direction, the leading soloists of the St. Petersburg theater will perform Saint-Saens's opera Samson and Delilah.
Last autumn, Placido Domingo directed the Bolshoi Theater Symphony Orchestra for the first time during the performance of Puccini's opera Manon Lescaut. The audience greeted him with a long standing ovation.
The opera performance was included in the program of the Stars of the White Nights festival. The forum also includes the Zarzuela with Placido Domingo concert. It is scheduled for June 30. Zarzuela is a genre of musical theater. It has been known in Spain since the 17th century. Domingo called zarzuela a special phenomenon. According to him, his father and mother were artists of zarzuela. The concert will be accompanied by the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra. The conductor's stnd will be taken by Jordi Bernase.
At the age of 80, Domingo is still actively working. He only made a pause last March after contracting COVID-19.
