The victory over Sweden in the shoot-out series took the Russian national ice hockey team to the playoffs of the Ice Hockey World Championship, which is taking place in Riga, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.

The game between Russia and Sweden was important for both teams. The victory gave the Russians a chance to complete the group stage in the first place. The Swedes lost their hopes of continuing the struggle for the cup and medals because of defeat.

The Swedish national team scored the first goal in the opening period, the score 1: 0 lasted almost until the end of the game, when the Russians scored two goals at intervals of 12 seconds. However, the Swedes had enough time to level the score and send the game first to overtime, and then to a shootout.

The Russians turned out to be more successful in it, with Vladimir Tarasenko scoring the winning shootout.
