The anniversary of the first manned flight into space is being celebrated by the Russian mission to the UN in New York and the permanent mission to international organizations in Vienna, TASS reports. The launch of a special project in social networks is timed to coincide with the Cosmonautics Day.

According to the press secretary of the diplomatic mission in New York, Fyodor Strzhizhovsky, a decade ago the UN General Assembly gave this holiday an international status.

The First in Space project united Twitter and Facebook. Until April 12, archival materials, documentaries, newsreels and audio recordings will be posted on social networks. They will be supplemented by the memoirs of diplomats who accompanied the cosmonauts on trips.

The focus will be on the visit to the UN of Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova. Russian cosmonauts visited New York in the fall of 1963.
