Russian sappers, while working in Laos, have cleared about a hectare from explosives, RIA Novosti reports.

During the humanitarian demining operation, which has been going on since November last year, sappers have defused more than 100 mines and shells, including American-made cluster bombs. The sappers operate near the Thonghaihin airfield in Xienghuang province.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that demining in the area is complicated by the deep burial of ammunition - they are found almost two meters deep - and many fragments, which greatly slows down the pace of search.

The branch of the International Mine Action Center of the Russian Armed Forces will appear in Laos, and local sappers will be trained there. The operation to clear the territory of ammunition is being carried out by the Russian military together with the People's Army of Laos. Lao sappers study and practice together with their Russian colleagues. They will be able to use Russian equipment used in the search for explosives and Russian protection.
