Translators from different countries celebrate professional holiday

International Translator's Day is celebrated on Wednesday, September 30. It was established in 2017 by the UN General Assembly in honor of the role that translation plays in bringing peoples together. Translation also contributes to development and understanding, strengthening of peace in the international arena.

The professional holiday of translators was timed to commemorate St. Jerome of Stridon. He is considered the patron saint of representatives of this profession. He was the first to translate the Old and New Testaments into Latin. His translation a thousand years later was recognized as the official Latin text of the Holy Scriptures. It is also believed that Jerome was the creator of the Glagolitic alphabet. The only city in Russia where the day of the translator was included in the official list of holidays is St. Petersburg.

Experts call it a delusion to believe that if machine translation exists, it is possible to abandon professional translation.

St. Petersburg was ahead of many other regions of the country in popularizing the translation business. It is here that the Sensum de Sensu translation competition has been held for almost 20 years. 

Several years ago, the Association of Translation Teachers was created in St. Petersburg. Today, it includes not only teachers of higher educational institutions, but also representatives of translation companies from all over Russia and several neighboring countries.
