President of Moldova stated special status of Russian language in the country

President of Moldova Igor Dodon called Russian the language of interethnic communication. He said this during a speech at a session of the UN General Assembly, RIA Novosti reports. He spoke Russian. The head of the republic is confident that the knowledge of Russian is an advantage for the residents of Moldova in realizing the opportunities that exist in the modern world.

Igor Dodon said that almost the entire population of the country speaks several languages, which allows citizens to get acquainted with the culture of different peoples. At the same time, the Russian language has a special status. The President assured that Chisinau is doing everything possible to preserve the mutual respect of people of different nationalities and religions.

Earlier, the Constitutional Court of Moldova deprived the Russian language of its official status in the republic, and called the law passed 30 years ago obsolete. The data of sociological studies carried out on the territory of Moldova over the past ten years show that every third resident of the country considers Russian to be their native language, and 40% of the Moldovan population uses Russian in everyday communication. Moreover, more than 95% of Moldovan residents understand Russian.

According to other polls, more than 60% of the republic's population speaks and writes fluent Russian. The number of Moldovan residents who do not understand Russian at all does not exceed one percent. More than 50% of the country's citizens would like the Russian language in Moldova to have the status of a second state language.
