Nearly 600 students in Irish schools have received state grades in Russian. Due to the cancellation of exams due to the coronavirus pandemic, grades were set based on student performance, RussianIreland.com reports.

The number of Irish schoolchildren choosing Russian for state exams is growing every year, more than doubling in five years. The growth is associated with demographic reasons, as well as with the fact that schoolchildren from Russian-speaking families strive to enroll in prestigious universities in demanded faculties and need additional points.

According to Russian language teachers, passing the state exam in Russian is not easy even for native speakers, since it requires proficiency in English. About half of the exam is held in English, some of the tasks are related to listening to the Russian text, the questions on which are drawn up in English. This creates difficulties for those who have recently found themselves in Ireland.

The number of Irish people who want to master the Russian language is also growing. Students of the courses believe that knowledge of the Russian language will introduce them to Russian culture and history, broaden their horizons, and also help in business.
