The Russian Union of Latvia (RUL), following the election results, passed to the Riga City Council. The party announced this on its Facebook page. For the first time in the last decade, the RUL faction appeared in the parliament of the Latvian capital.

It will be represented in the Riga City Council by Miroslav Mitrofanov, Yakov Pliner, Vladimir Buzaev and Alexander Kuzmin.

The politicians note that, most likely, the RUL will work in opposition, but on some issues it is going to cooperate with the ruling coalition.

According to RUL co-chairman Miroslav Mitrofanov, the RUL voters are mostly Russian-speaking residents of Riga. In the capital, there are about 50 percent of them. But, unfortunately, some are still non-citizens, which deprives them of the right to vote. For Russian-speaking residents, the priority is to preserve education in their native language, provide residents with the opportunity to choose between Latvian and Russian when communicating with officials, as well as preserve historical memory.
