Scientists from Sevastopol State University (SevSU) will go on the second underwater archaeological expedition to Syria. Experts will conduct research on more than one 120 objects off the coast of Tartus. Syria has selected Russian researchers to carry out archaeological work among groups from several countries, RIA Novosti reports.

The research will be carried out in the water area of Arwad Island with an area of 20 square meters. It is known that there was a city on the island, and the Phoenicians built a fortress on the island.

The specialists will dive to a depth of 2 to 90 meters; the group includes divers from the Black Sea Naval School.

According to Ivan Kusov, Vice-Rector for Strategic Communications of SevSU, the Russian university has actually received a monopoly from Syria on research in a region where archaeological work has not been carried out for thirty years. Representatives of a number of countries received a refusal from the Syrian authorities, who trusted Russian scientists.

The research results will be presented at scientific conferences to be held in Syria and Crimea. The works of archaeologists under water will be filmed, which will also add to the scientific material.
