It is 45 years since the legendary meeting in space. On July 17, 1975, the spacecraft of the USSR and the USA, Soyuz-19 and Apollo, successfully docked in orbit. Starting from the surface of the planet on July 15, they met two days later and made two docking, thereby confirming that the first docking was not an accidental success, the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reminds.

The Soviet crew included Alexei Leonov and Valery Kubasov. The Apollo was carrying by astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald Slayton.

The event went down in history as a triumph of science and technology. But the fact that the USSR and the USA, which had been in confrontation for a long time, carried out a joint project, turned out to be even more important. The crew members of the two countries shook hands - as Leonov said, it happened just over the Elbe. This handshake has become a symbol of detente in international relations.

The For Peace and Progress exhibition opened in Moscow to mark this event. It is located in the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics and can be seen until September 6.  Genuine mission items, archival photographs, newspaper issues, stripes, commemorative medals are among the exhibits.

Earlier, Roscosmos published declassified documents on the eve of the first Apollo-Soyuz docking.
