Second-ever chess match between space and Earth scheduled on June 9

The second-ever chess game is going to take place between space and Earth, TASS reports. It is organized by the VKontakte social network and the Cosmonautics Museum. The game will be held on June 9. The first Space-Earth match took place this day 50 years ago.

The cosmonauts Ivan Wagner and Anatoly Ivanishin will play from the ISS. Their rival from Earth will be Sergey Karjakin, the world champion in rapid chess.

The live broadcast will begin at 11:45 and will be avialable on the Moscow Museum of Cosmonautics' website. The match with comments in English will be shown on the Roscosmos YouTube channel.

The first match was held in 1970. It lasted almost six hours, but ended in a draw. Space was represented by Andriyan Nikolaev and Vitaliy Sevastyanov, Earth - Nikolai Kamanin, head of cosmonaut training and cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko. The broadcast was conducted by cosmonaut Valery Bykovsky.

Opponents communicated with each other over the air. They made moves when the spacecraft passed over Soviet territory. Special chess adapted to the conditions of weightlessness are used for the game.
