Fans have named Russian hockey player of the Washington Capitals team Alexander Ovechkin the best sniper in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Russian striker won the poll, organized by NBC, outperforming prominent American and Canadian hockey players, TASS reported.

The voting took place according to the system of games for relegation: sixteen hockey players were divided into pairs in which hockey fans chose the winners. Having overcome several stages, Alexander Ovechkin “met” in the final with the legendary Mario Lemieux and surpassed him in the number of votes cast - 55% of the voters chose the Russian player.

In the current season, Alexander Ovechkin scored nearly fifty goals in 68 matches and topped the list of top league snipers. In total, he scored 706 goals, which is the eighth achievement in the history of the NHL. This year, Ovechkin was the first Russian hockey player to enter the top ten most successful NHL players.
