The ceremony of laying wreaths at the Memorial to Soviet soldiers who fell in the fields of World War II took place at the Antakalnis Cemetery of Vilnius. The event, dedicated to Defender of the Fatherland Day, was attended by employees of the embassies of Russia and Belarus, veterans of the Great Patriotic War, representatives of the press and organizations of Russian compatriots, Sputnik reports.

Russian Ambassador to Lithuania Alexander Udaltsov addressed the audience and announced the need to preserve the memory of the exploits of Soviet soldiers who saved the planet from fascism. The diplomat emphasized that the current situation encourages to be ready to defend the homeland and “keep the powder dry.”

Commemorative actions at the Antakalnis Cemetery in honor of Defender of the Fatherland Day have long-standing traditions that have not been interrupted due to the decision of the Lithuanian authorities to cancel the holiday. Every year, representatives of the Russian community come to the burial places of Soviet soldiers on February 23.
