The international opera festival opens on Friday, January 31, in the capital of Tatarstan. The forum, which bears the name of the great Russian singer Feodor Chaliapin, will be the thirty-eighth in a row. It is the oldest opera festival in Russia.

Usually, its beginning is timed to the birthday of Chaliapin, who was born on February 13. The idea of the festival remains unchanged throughout its entire existence. The program, as a rule, includes productions of the Dzhalil Tatar Opera and Ballet Theater but the main parts are performed by invited soloists - famous Russian and foreign singers and conductors.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera The Tsar’s Bride will open the program. The head of the Bolshoi Theater Vladimir Urin will become the special guest of the ceremony.

About forty guests from eight countries of the world are taking part in the large-scale cultural forum this year. For the first time, performers from Kazakhstan, Italy and Egypt will perform in Kazan. The festival program consists of ten opera productions, including a concert version of Bohemia by Giacomo Puccini.
