Russian embassy: no Russian citizens on board of plane crashed in Iran

Russian citizens are not among those killed in a plane crash that occurred in Tehran, RIA Novosti reports. According to the Russian embassy in Iran, there were no Russians aboard the Boeing 737. Diplomats expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims of this terrible tragedy.

The plane owned by Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) crashed on Wednesday, January 8. It was heading to Kiev. The crash occurred early in the morning, during a departure from an airport located in the south of the Iranian capital. About one hundred and eighty people were on board of the Boeing, all of them died. Among the victims were German, Swedish, British, Afghan citizens of Germany, Sweden, Canada, Britain, Afghanistan, Ukraine. Most of the passengers were Iranian citizens.

According to the official version, the cause of the crash was the ignition of one of the engines. At this stage, the version of the terrorist act is ruled out by the investigation.

Condolences on behalf of the Russian people to the presidents of Ukraine and Iran were expressed by Vladimir Putin. “In Russia, they share the sorrow of those who have lost their dear ones and wish them to stay strong and courageous,” the head of state emphasized.

 “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news about the crash of the UIA flight near Tehran,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Twitter. “We are thinking about the families of the victims - citizens of Afghanistan, Canada, Germany, Iran, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.”
