Russian musician Evgeny Pobozhiy won Herbie Hancock Jazz Competition, TASS reported. He is the soloist of the Igor Butman Moscow Jazz Orchestra. The competition is run by Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.

Participants in the final tour performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington. For the first time in the history of world jazz, the main prize went to a musician from Russia.

Pobozhiy had to compete with twelve people. Guitarists from different countries took part in the qualifying round. Their talent and skill were evaluated by the masters of jazz music, whose names are known around the world - Stanley Jordan, Lionel Loueke, Russell Malone, Pat Metheny, Chico Pinheiro, Lee Ritenour and John Scofield.

Three people reached the final. A graduate of Berkeley College and William Patterson University Cecil Alexander and a graduate of the New England Conservatory in Boston and former member of Donny Maxxaline saxophonist ensemble Max Light also fought for the victory.

The music competition was first held in the mid-eighties of the last century. Until this year, it bore the name of American jazz pianist Thelonious Monk.
