Russian and Chinese leaders Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping have launched gas supplies from Russia to China via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline, the Kremlin’s website reports.

According to the Russian president, the start of the gas pipeline takes relations between the two countries in the energy sector to a new level. Vladimir Putin recalled that this year Moscow and Beijing celebrated the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The launch of the pipeline makes the task of bringing bilateral trade by 2024 to two hundred billion dollars even closer.

The pipeline transports raw materials from the Irkutsk and Yakutia gas production centers to Russian consumers in the Far East and to China. A site of the pipeline with a length of more than two thousand kilometers was opened today. It connects the Chayandinskoye field in Yakutia and Blagoveshchensk, which borders with China.

At the next stage, it is planned to open a site with a length of about eight hundred kilometers from the Kovykta field to Chayandinskje field. The total length of the Power of Siberia will be about three thousand kilometers, about forty billion cubic meters of gas will pass through it annually. The gas pipeline was built for more than five years, the cost of its construction exceeded a trillion rubles.
