The question of language today is the very border that divides society, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes. He stated this at a press conference on October 10, according to RIA Novosti.

According to Zelensky, today the language issue, like all other topics that split the country, is not worth raising. The head of state is sure that the authorities should listen to the society and try to unite it.

The fight with the Russian language has intensified in Ukraine, as the authorities are trying to ban everything that is somehow connected with Russia. A language law has recently entered into force, which has increased pressure on those who speak Russian and representatives of other national minorities. Many provisions of the document do not comply with international obligations undertaken by Kiev and contradict the Ukrainian Constitution. The law also does not comply with the Minsk agreements.

Earlier Zelensky was going to study this law for compliance with the Constitution, as it was adopted without discussion with the public.

Zelensky failed to answer the question regarding another law that discriminates against the Russian-speaking population. It turned out that the head of state did not know anything about plans to transfer all Russian schools into Ukrainian. When he was reminded of the statement of the Minister of Education of Ukraine that this would happen at the beginning of the next school year, the president promised to clarify this issue.

Russkiy Mir reported that this law virtually prohibits teaching in any language other than Ukrainian. According to the document, children will be able to study in the languages of national minorities, which include Russian, only in the elementary grades. Starting from the fifth grade, all subjects of the school curriculum will be taught exclusively in Ukrainian.

Zelensky also called "odd and disadvantageous" for Ukraine the lack of direct air travel with Russia. It was even more strange, if one considered the fact that the trains continued to run, he stated. Air traffic was canceled three years ago at the initiative of the Kiev authorities.

The Ukrainian president considers his phone calls to Russian President Vladimir Putin as the first steps to resolving the conflict in the Donbass. The heads of state spoke on the phone twice - in July and in October. They discussed the release of convicted and detained persons.
