About 1.7 billion rubles are planned to be allocated for the creation of the Russian analogue of Wikipedia in 2020–2023. This is stated in the appendix to the law on the federal budget. The difference between the Russian electronic encyclopedia and Wikipedia, the largest reference resource in the world, will be that the articles of the Russian analogue will be subjected to scientific verification, the Kommersant newspaper reports.

The idea of creating a Russian Internet encyclopedia has been discussed for several years. Three years ago, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev proposed translating the Great Russian Encyclopedia, which was published from 2004 to 2017, into electronic form.

The working group created in 2016 included representatives of the Ministry of Communications, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Culture, the Russian Academy of Sciences and other government agencies. It is reported that the "Big Russian Encyclopedia" publishing house will take up the development of a new Internet resource.

The popularity of the Russian-language Wikipedia indicates that a new reference Internet resource in Russian will be in demand. Russkiy Mir reported that the Russian version of Wikipedia ranked sixth in popularity in the world, and resource founder Jimmy Wales called it the most dynamically growing Wikipedia segment in the world.
