Russian-Japanese Theater Competition opened in Japan

The Theater Competition has started in Tokyo, TASS reports. It is simultaneously held in Russia and Japan and has united the two countries for the first time.

According to Russian deputy minister of culture Pavel Stepanov, cultural cooperation between the two countries is constantly developing and has reached a very high level. The works of Russian filmmakers will be presented to the attention of Japanese viewers this autumn. Screenings will be held as part of the Russian Film Week.

Performances of the Theater Competition will be held on the stage of the Tadashi Suzuki Center. It was founded in the mid-sixties of the last century in the city of Toga. The productions of prominent directors, world stars of theatrical art can be seen there, including Robert Wilson, Theodoros Terzopoulos, Valery Fokin, Jarosław Fret, Oskaras Korsunovas and others.

According to the artistic director of the Alexandrinsky Theater Valery Fokin, the competition can be called a unique event in every sense. It proves that the two countries are moving towards each other, the director believes.

The Japanese part of the competition will continue for a month, while the program in Russia will last almost six months. The program in Japan starts with the King Lear production. Suzuki translated Shakespeare's tragedy into the language of Japanese theater.

The Theater Competition opened in mid-June in St. Petersburg on the square near the Alexandrinsky Theater. Its program included over fifty productions of Russian and foreign theaters from 21 countries.

The main activities of the project will be held in the fall of 2019 and will cover almost two dozen Russian regions. The Artek camp will be one of the venues for the event.
