The post of mayor of Tallinn has been taken by a Russian-speaking politician for the first time in many years, Sputnik news agency reports.  The election of the mayor took place on Thursday, April 11, at an extraordinary session of the city assembly. The only contender was Mikhail Kylvart, who headed the parliament of the Estonian capital. He is a member of the Center Party, which received the most votes in the elections to the city council.

Forty-five out of seventy-nine deputies voted for his candidacy. It was required to get at least forty votes to win.

Mikhail Kylvart is known as an advocate of education in Russian and an active supporter of the development of sports in Estonia. Nine years ago he joined the Council of Russian Schools, which was engaged in the preservation of Russian-language education in the Baltic republic. In the spring of 2011, Mikhail Kylvart took the position of Deputy Mayor of Tallinn for youth, sports, culture, integration and education.
