International Theater Day celebrated in Russia today

International Theater Day is celebrated on Wednesday, March 27, the website of Ministry of Culture informs. It was established at the initiative of the International Theater Institute in 1961. The holiday is intended to strengthen peace and friendship between people, and to deepen creative cooperation between countries and peoples. On this day, theaters hold festivals and show their best performances worldwide. 

Over 1000 events are planned in Russian theaters today, including excursions on theatrical backstage, free performances, creative evenings, master classes, and meetings with famous directors and actors. 

100 Names of Russian Theater project on Kultura.rf website is timed to the Theater Day. Russian Institute of Theatrical Art - GITIS and Russian State Library of Arts are its authors and developers.

Users of the website can get acquainted with the information about the most interesting, famous and talented people who played a big role in the development of theatrical art in our country. Biographical materials written with the participation of GITIS specialists are accompanied by unique historical images provided by the library. 

For the holiday, the site organizes online live streams of the performances of leading theater groups, and posts recordings of performances based on works of Russian and foreign classics with the participation of famous actors. 

Users can see Chekhov's Cherry Orchard, Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, and stagings of Don Quixote and Elder Son. There is a selection of performances of Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters.

On the page of the Theater Day campaign, you can find the history of theaters and theater figures, read what famous Russian filmmakers taught students and what artists of the Silver Age showed themselves as theater artistic directors. Popular actors and directors told about their first theatrical impressions and debut roles, the purpose of the theater and today's drama.
